Module Description: The aim of this course is to provide students with a methodology for analysing and understanding the process of transposition of novels into films, not simply with the intention of evaluating one in relation to the other, but to establish the kind of relation a film might have with the book it is based upon. The lectures will set up procedures that can be used to distinguish between those elements which can be transferred from one medium to the other (such as narrative) and those which, given their specificity and their dependence on different signifying systems, cannot be moved so easily between different media (i.e. enunciation).听
The course will be structured around four novels, chosen according to their literary genre (e.g. historical novel, experimental novel, formation novel etc.), and their respective cinematic transpositions. Students will be expected to read extracts from the primary literary texts and secondary critical readings that will provide theoretical background on questions of film adaptation, narratology and literary genres.听
