Description

This module will investigate the value of democracy from a philosophical perspective. It is intended for students with a range of specializations, and it assumes no prior experience in political philosophy. It will introduce students to major theories of democracy as well as major critiques of democracy. Students will read historical and contemporary theorists of democracy, examining their conceptions of democracy and their evaluations of its merit.听A particular focus will be the debate between 鈥渋nstrumental鈥 and 鈥渘on-instrumental鈥 accounts of the value of democracy.听Throughout the class, students will be taught the methods and tools of philosophical analysis.听
