Description

In this module, we will cover a number of aspects of brain function and relate them to the workings of the mind. This will include how damage to the brain improves our understanding of brain function, looking at mental processes and how they are related to observed changes in brain function using functional neuro-imaging, how hormones and transmitters and the brain interact to affect mental function and the impact of genes and treatment on mental function. The aim is to give an overall view of brain function and how it relates to the mind.

The aim of the module is:

The overall aim of this module is to provide students knowledge and understanding of how brain function, the conscious mind, sleep and behaviour interact.

To provide students knowledge about how changes in brain function due to disease or trauma affect these functions.

To reveal the relevance of the main concepts of psychiatry and build on their functional knowledge developed during year 2 neuroscience module.

To provide an introduction to the treatment of mental illness with particular focus on healthy physical, social and emotional functioning.

To give students practice on core evaluative skills to analyse relevant published data and disseminate the emerging findings through effective communication
