Description

The perception of play as the ‘universal language of childhood’ has been a significant part of early childhood education theory, pedagogy and policy in different contexts. In this module, students will explore critically diverse perspectives about the purposes, functions and values of play and their relationships with learning, through a wide range of theoretical, pedagogical, cultural and political standpoints. The module will illustrate the complex nature of early childhood education by crossing educational and developmental theories about play with historical, socio-cultural and gender approaches, including psycho-pedagogical, biological, and anthropological perspectives.
