Description

Overview:

This module is an individual investigative project conducted in the third year of the BEng and MEng degree courses. Students conduct a project on a relevant topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff, and produce a written report and other project outputs, e.g. design drawings, prototype or software. This is laid down as a compulsory element of the degree programme by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for students to obtain an accredited degree leading to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer qualification.

The project work will be of an investigative nature and may involve analytical, numerical, design and experimental elements. The initiative for carrying out all aspects of the work rests with each student.

Students can carry out an investigation into a problem either chosen from a list of suitable problems proposed by individual members of staff, or on a problem of their own suggestion. Self-proposed project topics must be approved by the Module Coordinator and have an agreed supervisor.

Learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Apply original thinking and develop a project plan to solve an open-ended engineering problem.
  • Develop a solution to the given engineering problem by using an experiment, and/or a computer program/simulation, and/or design methodology, and/or any another methodology approved by the supervisor.
  • Document the problem, the applied methodology, solution, critical analysis and the conclusions of the work to professional written and oral standards.
  • Explain, discuss and defend the investigation process and outcome of a project to a panel of academic assessors with an oral presentation.

On successful completion of How To Change The World, students will be able to:

  • harness their technical capabilities to help solve grand societal challenges
  • scope out and design socially, politically and economically feasible design solutions.
  • respond creatively and quickly to tough challenges
  • communicate effectively with their peers and experts from industry and policy
  • engage directly with global industry and academic experts and benefit from direct feedback.
