Description

This module is designed to equip students in trauma-informed approaches to managing archives, records and broader cultural heritage collections containing sensitive and potentially traumatising content. ÌýStudents will be equipped to design and manage services that centre safety and support for all users of the cultural heritage in their care, with an additional focus on self-care strategies.

The course covers three main areas:

  • An inter-disciplinary and critical examination of trauma as a concept with a focus on its applicability in the cultural heritage field
  • Trauma-informed management practice for cultural heritage materials
  • Secondary (vicarious) trauma and self-care

The module will be built on the principles of relational pedagogy and will place a strong emphasis on dialogue and reflection. Lecture content will be pre-recorded and made available on a weekly basis alongside readings and activities to be undertaken independently. Journalling will be used as a tool for students to examine their experiences and learning on the module, guided thematically by the tutor. In-person blocks of teaching will be predominantly discursive adopting a seminar style. Site visits and external speakers will be embedded into the teaching.

The aim is to equip students in trauma-informed approaches to managing archives, records and broader cultural heritage collections containing sensitive and potentially traumatising content. ÌýStudents will come away from the module ready to design and manage services that centre safety and support for all users of the cultural heritage in their care, with an additional focus on self-care strategies.

Module learning outcomes are:

  • Understand the development and use of trauma as a concept in different disciplines, contexts and settings and how this relates to the emergence of the concept in cultural heritage discourse
  • Understand what trauma-informed approaches are and why they are useful in managing sensitive and potentially distressing cultural heritage materials
  • Describe specific issues to consider when implementing a trauma-informed approach within cultural heritage settings
  • Be able to design trauma-informed cultural heritage services
  • Understand the potential for secondary (vicarious) trauma when managing sensitive and potentially distressing collections and apply strategies for managing secondary trauma (for the self and others)
