Description

This module will provide new thinking about public health which integrates the arts and sciences to address current health and social care issues. Sessions will consist of interactive and creative workshops and lectures. Topics will include an initial lecture on 鈥淭he Art and Science of Public Health鈥 and then specific lectures focusing on the application of the arts and scientific approaches to public health, for example:

  • public health systems and structures
  • behaviour change theories
  • arts in public health communication
  • public health interventions for non-communicable diseases
  • creative approaches in public health
  • arts in mental health promotion
  • public health inequities
  • public health in the workplace
  • participatory global health
  • co-designing health architecture
  • public health and the environment

Teaching Delivery

The method of delivery will comprise blended learning. Students will attend weekly one-hour lecture and two-hour interactive workshop. This will involve drawing and other creative activities, led jointly by the course tutor and a range of contributors from 新香港六合彩开奖结果and external guests. Students will be required to participate in self-directed learning on Moodle involving reading for the health promotion video and case study assignments covering and expanding upon the lecture topics.听

Module aims and objectives

鈥 To provide students with an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of public health within individual, societal and global contexts.听

鈥 To develop students鈥 understanding of how the arts is applied to promote health and deliver engaging health interventions.听

鈥 To develop critical appraisal skills to review a range of evidence for arts in public health.听

鈥 To enhance students鈥 knowledge and understanding of participatory global mental health and health inequalities within the public health context.听

鈥 To engage students to reflect on their own, local and wider communities鈥 health and well-being.听

鈥 Gain confidence to communicate and apply learning to promote public health.听

By the end of this module students should be able to:听

鈥 Describe key interdisciplinary approaches to public health.听

鈥 Summarize the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches to public health to individuals, wider society, and global contexts.听

鈥 Gain skills to actively engage in the discourses surrounding the concept of public health.听

鈥 Develop critical thinking skills to appraise a range of public health evidence.听

鈥 Gain practical experience of creating a health promotion video and reflect on its potential impact through reviewing and reporting on the research evidence.听

鈥 Increased awareness and insight of one鈥檚 own engagement with public health through creating a visual diary and reflective writing.听
