Description
Summary
The module will consider the tertiary hospital environment and complex conditions requiring multidisciplinary input. Each year we study a number of conditions which are used as a basis for exploring the principles underlying treatment and management of complex disorders (these core topics change year by year). The module includes 2 x 1 week placements at GOSH.
All examinable topics will be covered in core lectures. In addition, you will gain first-hand appreciation of many of the issues during your placement at GOS. Many of these will have ethical and resource-utilisation issues, and there is a strong focus on multidisciplinary care.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
Using the studied clinical conditions as examples, you should be able to discuss and outline the following:
- Organisation of complex care within the NHS, including organization of services for children with conditions requiring specialist care, referral pathways and networks, shared care and the roles of different members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Services offered for different conditions, and the current and future issues within this system such as conflicts over resource allocation, tensions between hospitals, and the future of specialist services.
- Psychosocial issues that arise in the care of children with complex conditions such as long-term hospitalisation, family separation and multiple medical teams providing care.
- Clinical and academic aspects of complex conditions.
