Description
This module provides an introduction to the problems of terrorism and radicalisation. You will familiarise yourself with the problem of defining terrorism (what, exactly, is terrorism?), the size of the problem (how much terrorism is there in the world?), as well as the main explanations that have been proposed to explain why people radicalise and sometimes go on to engage in terrorist acts (for example - are they influenced by groups? do terrorists have a special kind of personality?). You will also discuss a brief overview of the ancient and modern history of terrorism. Importantly, you will get to know the ideology, history and tactics associated with Islamic-inspired terrorism, right-wing terrorism, and anti-government terrorism. In the second part of the module, you will then familiarise yourselves with different strategies which can be used to prevent and disrupt terrorism: 1) Efforts to anticipate and prevent terrorism acts through situational measures; 2) Approaches to counter-terrorism, which rely on specific legislation; 3)Strategies to prevent radicalisation.
