Description

This module enables students to continue developing their own understanding of the major products and systems used in construction, extending coverage from Year One on simple materials to cover larger scale products (modules/structures) as well as mechanical, electrical and other services and building systems. It is delivered in the context of the delivery of a multi-storey framed building – as a means to include the additional complexity associated with the required building services systems that are needed in such a structure (i.e. heating, lighting, ventilation, fire safety, electrics etc), and appreciate the regulatory environment for such buildings.

This module therefore deals with mainly internal construction, taking in aspects of structural layout, building services and systems installation, and how these are managed and integrated in modern construction practice in a multi-storey framed building. This approach gives students a more detailed technical appreciation of how buildings are delivered – and extends their technical vocabulary and analytical skills that will help them to improve construction projects’ buildability, safety and performance in the future. Importantly, it establishes their ability to articulate how different building systems and structural elements interact with one another – and the implications for human safety and wellbeing.

Lectures, discussions and presentations in class, informed by selected reading tasks and site visits.

Students are required to submit a 20-page portfolio at the end of the module, which focuses on key technical standards, as well as procedural and regulatory requirements associated with the construction products and systems for a given brief for a new multi-storey building. The module leader provides formative feedback on a small group presentation based on a review of technical regulatory documents.
