Description
This module aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of systematic reviews and meta-analysis, with a focus on how they are used to inform medical research and influence clinical policy and practice. The module will introduce key concepts and issues in systematic reviews, including the concept of bias, enabling students to interpret findings from published reviews and to assess their reliability and quality. It will also provide practical guidance on how the iBSc students can undertake a systematic review and carry out a simple meta-analysis (if appropriate), either for their research project or in their future career.
The following topics will be covered:
- An introduction to the concept of evidence synthesis in clinical research and why it is needed
- Key aspects of the design and conduct of systematic reviews and meta-analysis - focussing on questions of clinical effectiveness (treatment comparisons)
- Understanding, assessing and reducing bias in the context of systematic reviews
- Understanding, interpreting and appraising published reviews
- Systematic reviews and meta-analysis in practice - how do they influence research, policy and practice?
