Description

This module begins with an overview of the molecular and cellular processes underlying the initiation and progression of cancer. The sessions that follow discuss the processes implicated in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and examine how current cellular and molecular knowledge has supported new treatments. Additional sessions present the current diagnostic and treatment methods, including the most recent technological advances for cancer imaging, pharmacological or energy-based ablation and minimally invasive treatment. The clinical/surgical aspect of the module is emphasized with lectures on the treatment of specific carcinomas, such as pancreatic, upper and lower GI, breast and prostate cancer, delivered by oncologists and surgeons, representing the areas of treatment excellence at UCL-affiliated Hospitals. The module concludes with student presentations on case studies, for which each group of students has to design the diagnostic plan and treatment for a patient with a specific form of cancer.
