Description

Module Content

The two-term module will cover advanced topics in pragmatics as chosen by members of staff whose specialisation is in the field.

By the middle of the second term, students are expected to have developed an idea for their essay and will be encouraged to make a short presentation about that to the class.

Teaching Delivery

There will be five sessions per Term, roughly fortnightly. Teaching will take the form of either a seminar class led by a staff member, or a group discussion of assigned reading.

Indicative Topics

Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.

As this is a high-level topics module, topics will vary from year to year, depending on current research interests of staff. In recent times, topics have included, metaphor, polysemy, Bayesian approaches to pragmatics, scalar implicature, developmental pragmatics, clinical pragmatics.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The aim is develop the ability in students to engage with research topics at a high level; to be able to critically evaluate primary literature; to be able to develop research hypotheses.
