Description

Summary

This module is designed to be of relevance to all professionals who have an interest in and the responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation, stabilisation and transport of the critically ill child.ÌýThe course will use a variety of learning modalities to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to feel more confident in the stabilisation and transport of the critically ill child. It will cover the underlying physiology of common paediatric presentations, an evidence based approach to their management along with the appropriate technical skills required. The course will explore the physiological and logistical challenges that paediatric critical care transport involves.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  1. Recognise the critically ill child in the context of the pathophysiology and physiology of the disease.
  2. Apply the most evidence based approach to the acute management of critically ill children including the application of appropriate technical and non-technical skills.
  3. Recognise and manage the physiological and psychological impact of critical care transport.
  4. Understand the logistical challenges in facilitating paediatric critical care transport and the necessary governance and safety provisions required

Who is this module for?

This is one of the available core modules for the MSc Paediatrics and Child Health: Intensive Care pathway, and an optional module for all other MSc Paediatric and Child Health pathways. Any Level 7 students interested in taking this as an optional module, please contact the Module leader.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will receive 5 days of in person lectures/workshops, and will supplement learning through self-directed study.Ìý

Assessment

You will need to create a poster on a topic relating to transport of critically-ill children and including an up-to-date literature review. You will also be assessed by an oral presentation of the topic to examiners and student group.
