Description

The module is designed to give ophthalmic practitioners (optometrists, orthoptists and ophthalmic nurses) the knowledge and skills to evaluate and manage more complex ophthalmic emergencies in both a primary and secondary care setting. This module will provide clinical assessment and management skills to registered practitioners that will build on the knowledge gained during Fundamental Ocular Emergencies. This will cover:

  • Advanced knowledge of clinical assessments, procedures and triage relevant in an emergency setting
  • Identification of tests for further investigation and interpreting results via sophisticating imaging techniques
  • Development of clinical management plans
  • Knowledge on use and prescription of common drugs for use in managing acute and recurrent conditions
  • Knowledge on how to recognise systemic conditions that may be linked to ophthalmic presentations, where co-management/referral may be necessary
  • Understand the mechanisms on how to deliver emergency services and different models of care

On completion, practitioners will have both the knowledge and skills to work at an advanced specialist level both in a multidisciplinary setting and/or independently when examining patients presenting with ophthalmic emergencies.
