Description

This module consists of six lectures, four practicals and a fieldtrip, which usually takes place during the Easter vacation. This course aims to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of:

  • sedimentology and the principles of stratigraphy, facies analysis, and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction;
  • sediment transport / deposition processes in a range of sedimentary environments, both in siliciclastic and carbonate systems;
  • measurement and interpretation of sedimentary and structural features;
  • construction of sedimentary logs at a bed scale, and at a mapping scale;
  • recognition of a range of fossils and trace fossils;

By the end of this module students will gain:

  • an understanding of many sedimentary rocks and their depositional environment
  • a basic understanding of simple fluid dynamics applied to sediment transport/deposition processes;
  • an understanding of process-based aspects of selected modern and ancient sedimentary environments, variability and criteria for recognition;
  • an introduction to the concept of [sequence] stratigraphy analysis as tool to help understand sedimentary environments;
  • ability to measure and interpret various sedimentary and structural features

GEOL0006 Surface Processes, GEOL0015 Maps, Images and Structures, GEOL0016 Structural Geology are pre-requisites for this module.
