Content: TheÌýmoduleÌýshould enable you to design, undertake, analyse, present, and write up empirical work.ÌýYou will be familiar with this kind of module from PSYC0005, the first year laboratoryÌýmodule. During the course of the year students carry out four labs. These are carried out in groups and with the support of a departmental demonstrator.

Teaching delivery: The expected delivery format is Labs 1-3 will run for the duration of four weeks. Lab 4 runs for 6 weeks. For labs 1-3, a member of staff will upload a lecture on the pertinent topic. Students will have a chance to ask the member of staff any questions on the lecture during an organised session on Microsoft Teams. Each week students will meet with their assigned demonstrator in-person to work through the various steps of the lab: i) research design, ii) data collection, iii) data analysis, iv) presentation of findings. Lab 4 is organised by a member of staff and/or PhD students and involves a variety of delivery formats usually involving dialogues between students and staff who give specific advice and training on methods appropriate for the project. Lab 4 is written up in a similar way to labs 1-3.

Indicative Topics: Indicative lab topics – based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes: (1) Visual Perception, (2) Language, (3) Decision Making, and (4) a group project you choose to work on, from a selection of topics that vary from year to year.

Module Aims: To develop skills associated with psychological research through practical experience of designing empirical studies in several different fields of Psychology.
