Description
The Research Ethics and Regulation module provides a unique multi-disciplinary approach to a growing area of policy which is often regarded to be merely operational or instrumental for researchers especially in the health sector. There are many substantive values at play such as respecting any participants through consent procedures and making harm/benefit trade-offs such as between promoting the interests of individual participants and meeting the needs of science and society through review by independent ethics committees. With a grounding in moral theories and philosophical analysis, the module thus provides the critical skills needed to appraise key policies or ‘frameworks’ by the major national and international bodies. By understanding the rationales behind different systems of governing research in different contexts especially in medicine, we will reveal the moral and political values which underpin different organisational rules around research. Empirical studies will shed light on how well these rules are implemented in practice and comparative studies on the ethics of research in different cultures and countries including the developing world. By reviewing current issues and controversies, students will learn how to describe and justify their approach to research projects and programmes in the face of possible complaint or challenge.Ìý Ìý
