This is an intermediate module open to Year 2 students on the BSc Population Health Sciences programme. There is availability for ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûelective students from other departments. However, spaces are limited and are allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis on Portico.

Description

This module will provide students with an introduction to qualitative research methods equipping students with the knowledge and skills to understand, design and conduct high quality qualitative research. There will be an introduction into the principles of qualitative research. You will then apply this knowledge by having the chance to practice conducting interviews, running a focus group, and performing data analysis. Finally, using all this knowledge you will develop and present an electronic poster about a qualitative research idea.

At the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Understand when and why you would use qualitative research methods
  • Describe the principles of qualitative research design
  • Be able to formulate and construct a topic guide
  • Apply and evaluate some key interviewing skills
  • Organise and facilitate a focus group
  • Understand the principles and practicalities of conducting a basic thematic analysis
  • Plan a qualitative research study, specifying the details of how a study will be carried out
