Description

This module builds on Project Management 1 and considers developing an awareness of the processes and the principles of managing construction projects. It focuses on the value-related and social processes of Project Management

Aims:

  • An understanding of the multi-criteria objectives for construction project success and how these are established, balanced and tested for feasibility in the pre-execution states of the project.
  • An understanding of the social and socio-technical environment in which the role of the project manager and the project management team is set and the inter-relationship with individual and organizational behaviour.
  • An understanding of projects as a series of organisational learning processes which require active knowledge capture and management.

Objectives:

  • To develop an awareness of the economic value of land and constructed assets within an area.
  • To develop an understanding of the processes of client briefing, the nature of different types of client and the inter-relationship between the project and the client’s overall business.
  • To develop an understanding of the means of establishing the objectives of a project and of testing their viability.
  • To develop an understanding of importance of establishing an overall project strategy commensurate with the client’s requirements.
  • To develop an understanding of the overall role of the project manager and an awareness of the organisational and stakeholder context of project management.
  • To develop an understanding of human behaviour in projects including teamwork, motivation and leadership.
  • To develop an awareness of how people learn from project experience and the reality of projects using actual case studies.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this unit a student should be able to:

  • Understand the methodology behind the management of projects, maturity, excellence and project strategy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of configuration management including configuration identification, change control systems, status accounting and auditing.
  • Assess and understand quality measures based on concepts such as quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), total quality management (TQM) and ISO 9000 standards.
  • Show an understanding of value management aspects: e.g. value planning, value engineering and value analysis and their applications during the various stages of the project life cycle.
  • Apply the principles of whole life costing and project appraisal including the evaluation and comparisons of different alternatives and the selection of the optimum options.
  • Demonstrate an insight of the fundamental principles of leadership styles and their appropriateness; and different motivation theories.
  • Establish an appreciation of different sources of conflicts in business environments and conflict resolution models; as well as how to manage the negotiation process.
