This module enables students to enhance their own, accurate understanding of the law which determines how firms and projects work in the construction industry today. This module introduces key principles and practices around contract law, as it is defined in English law, focusing on contracts and sub-contracts within the project management domain. The module provides knowledge drawn from legal documents, case law and textbooks which articulate the forms of contract found in construction and infrastructure projects, notably JCT and NEC. It extends the technical legal vocabulary and appraisal skills that will help students be able to successfully understand and interpret the implications of contract terms and requirements. The module also sets out the foundations of construction contract administration, which is fundamental to all project managers, whether they work for clients, asset owners, consultancy firms, or contractors.

Lectures, seminars and discussions in class, are informed by selected reading tasks. Guest lecturers provide cases and examples to illustrate how contracts are applied in the industry - and discuss what happens when things go right and wrong (i.e. disputes and adjudication).

Students are required to sit an open-book exam at the end of the module. The module leader provides formative feedback on quizzes, and students gain experience of reading legal and contractual documents – continuing their professional skills development.
