Description

Overview:

This module provides an overview of the consideration required to connect a prime mover to loads which, for example, might be generators, compressors or hydraulic pumps. Additionally, the module provides an introduction to the application of Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) to an engineering system.

The main aims of the module are:

  • To provide students with the skills necessary in the design and selection of components in a power train.
  • To explain and discuss the factors affecting the performance of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • To provide students with mathematical tools needed in the design and critically assess some of the major factors affecting the performance of a power train system and the coupling between a prime mover and its load.
  • To provide an introduction to the use of RAM analysis, applied to an engineering system by way of a project.
  • To introduce students the methodologies of duct sizing and fan matching in HVAC systems.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

  • Design and select components in a power train.
  • Design shafts for static and fatigue loading and select an appropriate type of coupling.
  • Design friction clutches and distinguish friction materials and mating surfaces.
  • Evaluate reciprocating compressors.
  • Size ducts and select fans.
  • Design and analyse a hydraulic and pneumatic power system.
  • Optimise system performance through Reliability, Availability and Maintenance analysis.
