  1. Popular Politics in Early Modern Britain Affiliate (HIST0531)

Description

This course explores the nature of, and developments in, 'popular' political culture in early modern Britain. It will examine what this term means, whether it is possible to explore history 'from below', and how to distil the distinctive qualities and attributes of popular politics. How did those outside the political and social elite experience, appreciate, and react to authority? What can we learn about popular political 'consciousness' and 'allegiance'? What issues provoked popular activism and agitation? Did popular politics incline towards 'radicalism' or 'conservatism'? In what ways did rural, urban and metropolitan politics differ?
