Description

Aims:

  • To provide an understanding of particle technology;
  • To provide an understanding of the principles of particulate separation processes and related processes;
  • To develop skills in the design of practical separation equipment in the context of sustainability and sustainable development

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:

  • be able to understand the mass and heat transfer phenomena involved in particulate processes and related processes;
  • be familiar with the procedures for the design of separation equipment in the context of sustainability and sustainable development;
  • be able to select an appropriate separation process to meet a required separation performance

Synopsis:

  • Fundamentals of particle technology including charaterisation of particle size, shape and size distribution, flow through packed beds and porous media;
  • Fundamentals of humidification, dehumidification, cooling and drying;

With a focus on particle formation processes, solid-liquid separation processes, membrane separations and chromatography consider:

  • Estimation of thermodynamic properties;
  • Design and analysis methodologies;
  • Equipment design
