Description

The module will provide an overview of the impact of cancer and cancer treatments on nutritional status as well as some consideration on cancer survivorship. The initial part of the module will focus on the metabolic processes involved in cancer cells with particular emphasis on cancer cachexia, its assessment and treatment including exercise, nutrition and drugs. Some aspects of psychosocial impact of cancer during the treatment phase will also be considered. Students will be further introduced to specific cancers (gastrointestinal, haematological, gynaecological, head and neck, and prostate cancers) and the relevant treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and molecular therapy. The impact of these treatments on metabolism will be assessed through specific case studies. Students will also examine patients’ specific nutritional needs. The final part of the module will focus on some aspects of cancer survivorship. There will be specific tutorial and journal club sessions on these topics facilitating students to review and critically evaluate complex literature, which will enable them to develop awareness of current findings on the nutritional status and treatment of cancer patients.
