Description
This module ELEC0032 - Networking Systems (previously referred to as ELEC310P) builds on ELEC0017 - Connected Systems (previously referred to as ELEC210P) and is part of the three-module IEP Connected Systems minor. ELEC0032 explores the technologies required for data communication and analysis targeted to Internet of Things (IoT) systems and applications. The knowledge and skills acquired in this module will be subsequently put into practice in ELEC0033 - Internet of Things (previously referred to as ELEC311P), where you will be required to design and build an end-to-end IoT system.
ELEC0032 explores the technologies that make up networks of systems. In particular, we will examine the 7-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model in detail and compare it to conceptual models of the so-called Internet of Things (IoT) stack.
This module will cover the following topics:
- Physical layer considerations, including wireless technologies, topologies and networks.
- Medium access control, such as protocols and architectures targeted to IoT applications.
- Network and transport basics including TCP/IP, DNS and security.
- Data analytics and statistical learning fundamentals.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Show technical understanding of key design considerations and trade-offs in an end-to-end networking system.
- Specify technologies required to meet a design requirement.
- Evaluate standards, proprietary systems and published research to determine available solutions at different layers.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyse and assess the performance of a system with the aid of industry-standard software tools.
