Description

This module aims to explore artefacts as cultural products, fan practices, and the social arrangements that develop around them. This includes introducing the role of media franchises in developing fan communities, exploring ideas around audience studies, learning about theories of identity in relation to fandom and representation in media texts, introducing ideas looking at consumerism, textual poaching, cult media, cult geographies, and cult bodies. The module will further develop your understanding of critical approaches to discourse analysis through a multimodal lens and enable you to produce a portfolio of work, examine the construction of media texts, their production processes, and critically assess reception. You will work together to simulate a fan culture group by making a collaborative fan website. This will involve the production of diverse media artefacts as part of your portfolio of work putting into practice the skills you developed in the first year of the programme across the different modules.
