Description

This module will provide you with a range of the practical and intellectual skills necessary to pursue a career in molecular biology or related area. You will work for six afternoons in consecutive weeks in the laboratory on a set of interconnected experiments (research project). These practical sessions will be accompanied by lectures and workshops to put the experimental work in context and support you in writing-up your results in the form of a laboratory report.

Besides the scientific skills acquired by working in the lab you will improve on the following skills: Numeracy and statistics, Planning ahead, Time management, Team working, Meeting deadlines, Writing reports, Managing data acquisition, Ability to follow instructions, consider feedback comments and respond accordingly.

Polymerase chain reaction

Plasmids and their use

Genome, allelic variations & libraries

Bioinformatics - Data storage, searching and sequencing
