Description

This module will examine core themes and debates in contemporary metaphysics. It will equip you not only with an understanding of these core topics, but also with conceptual tools that will help you become a participant in the debate.

Sample topics (may vary slightly year to year):

  1. Objects and Properties
  2. Possibility and Necessity
  3. Causation
  4. Space and Time
  5. The Nature of Truth

Teaching Delivery

There will be a one-hour lecture and a one-hour seminar per week. You will be required to read one or two Key Readings each week prior to the lecture. Seminars will be an opportunity to engage in interactive discussion of the week’s topic.

By the end of the module, you should:

Ìý Ìý 1. Have a sound understanding of a range of core themes and debates in contemporary metaphysics.
Ìý Ìý 2. Be equipped with the understanding and conceptual resources needed to contribute to these debates yourself.
Ìý Ìý 3. Have further honed your ability to analyse arguments and construct rigorous arguments yourself.
Ìý Ìý 4. Have improved your essay-writing skills.
