Description

Mathematical Modelling and Analysis I helps you to develop your understanding of core mathematical concepts, and modelling and analysis skills that underpin the practice of engineering. This module will help you to develop the mathematical tools and approaches you will need throughout your career, regardless of your specialism.ÌýÌý

The mode of delivery for this module is a blended learning approach integrating video recorded lecture material, live weekly tutorials, structured online Moodle activities and resources, and computer programming and simulation using mathematical tools like MATLAB. Within the tutorials, you will work on engineering scenarios that reinforce taught concepts and provide an opportunity to introduce to you how mathematics is applied in an engineering context. Coursework will focus on applying the mathematical concepts taught each week to real engineering problems sourced from across all the engineering disciplines at UCL.Ìý

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, providing you engage with all of the learning activities, you should be able to:

  • recognise how mathematical ideas are embedded in engineering contextsÌý

  • represent real-world engineering systems in a mathematical frameworkÌý

  • identify, understand and apply a range of mathematical concepts, including Estimation, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods and Statistics, to analyse specific problems and identify the appropriate mathematics to realise a solutionÌý

  • employ appropriate computer modelling techniques to solve and evaluate the performance of engineering systems efficiently in MATLABÌý

  • relate the behaviour of the output of mathematical models to the underlying physical or conceptual models of interestÌý

  • carry out engineering problem solving both collaboratively in a team and independentlyÌý

  • present and interpret mathematical results in effective and appropriate ways to varied audiences, including non-mathematical engineering audiences.
