Description

Module Overview:

This module is positioned as a foundation module within the leadership branch of the health professions education master’s programme yet can be enjoyed as an independent module for those interested in learning more about leadership.Ìý ÌýStudents will explore theories around leadership and relate them directly to the contemporary educational healthcare environment where they work. They will take part in group tasks, explore their leadership style, reflect on self and how they relate to and motivate others.

Aims:

This module will suit all healthcare professionals interested in improving their leadership skills. In a changing societal and healthcare landscape, delivering progressive healthcare is a challenging process. This module has been developed to allow professionals who take responsibility for the resourceful and safe organisation of healthcare practice to develop their skills and understanding of workplace-based leadership and its application.

Intended learning outcomes:

Participants will develop skills that enable them to:

  • Understand themselves and their relationship with others.
  • Describe the scope, role and academic responsibilities of leadership in contemporary healthcare
  • Establish and maintain effective teamwork and communication.
  • Manage team members’ progression, including the struggling team member.
  • Guide the personal and professional development of team members.
  • Enhance leadership effectiveness through the use of assessment, including workplace-based assessment, supervision and feedback.
  • Determine appropriate levels of leadership autonomy to ensure safe and effective patient care whilst allowing team members to develop and extend their expertise.
  • Facilitate leadership development through developmental conversations to identify and address learning needs, improve their reflective practice and safely develop their clinical leadership.
  • Understand why transformation efforts fail.
  • Understand power in organisations

Method of delivery:

This module is fully online combining synchronous sessions with reading and group learning exercises on Moodle. ÌýThe aim is to encourage self-directed learning, reflection on personal experience and critical thinking. ÌýThis will enable students to engage in collaborative learning and to be in regular contact with module tutors for a high level of academic support.

During this module participants will work through course materials and readings and undertake directed learning activities with fellow participants. ÌýGuest speakers will share their leadership journeys and provide a unique opportunity for students to ask them questions.

Formative Assessment:

Each of the three contact days are based around a different theme and requires students to read journal articles and complete online activities.Ìý The themes are: Who are you? What are your values? and What sort of leader are you?

Summative Assessment:

You are required to write a 2,000-word essay directly relating a leadership themed topic of your choice to your own professional landscape. Topics that are commonly explored by students are:

  1. Definitions of leadership and how they apply to leading in the NHS Ìý
  2. Leadership and personality traits
  3. Leadership and patient safety
  4. Leading Teams
  5. Leadership and women
