Description

This module will introduce the concepts, methods and terminology essential to the scientific study of spoken language. It will cover the phonetic description of speech production, the quantitative analysis of speech sounds, and sources of variation and variety in speech.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to the structure & function of the larynx and vocal tract
  • Introduction to concepts and terminology of articulatory phonetics
  • Introduction to the phonology of English words and sentences
  • Audio recording of speech
  • Acoustic analysis of speech signals
  • Variation and variety of speech sounds

Aims

  • To provide knowledge of the structure and function of the vocal tract for speech
  • To develop skills in the phonetic description of spoken language
  • To introduce instrumental methods for analysis of speech sounds
  • To demonstrate how experimental methods can be applied to a range of phenomena in speech communication

Knowledge and understanding

  1. Terminology used in the phonetic description of speech production
  2. Familiarity with the phonology of English
  3. Concepts and methods used in the quantitative analysis of speech sounds
  4. Knowledge of how speech varies across speakers, accents, styles & emotions

Skills

  1. Ability to make a phonetic transcription of English words
  2. Ability to make an intonational transcription of English sentences
  3. Ability to make good quality audio recordings of speech
  4. Ability to make measurements of speech using waveforms, pitch tracks, spectra and spectrograms
