Description

Module Content

This module introduces students to phonology, the study of how different grammars organize different sounds and the restrictions on their combinations. It provides a solid foundation in phonological feature theory and rule-based analysis. Participants gain hands-on experience analyzing phonological data across a range of languages.

Teaching Delivery

Teaching is delivered via a weekly two-hour lecture in addition to a one-hour tutorial.

Indicative Topics

Phonological feature theory including contrast, neutralization, and the question of universality, autosegmental and prosodic structures, and rule-based analysis including formal theoretical analysis, rule-ordering, and questions of opacity.

Module Aims and/or Objectives

The course aims to equip students with a strong foundation in phonological representations and theory, as well as motivating questions at the heart of phonological research. By the end of term, students should be comfortable analyzing basic data sets.
