Description

In this module you will learn the basic architecture of the human brain and the fundamentals of neurophysiology. You will learn about neurons and action potentials, synaptic transmission as well as the function of different neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. You will also learn the role of non-neuronal glial cells. In addition, you will be introduced to different modes of neural plasticity and how this is key for brain functions.

This module will be delivered using face-to-face lectures combined with group activities. Group activities will include specific topic presentations and group reading of original research articles.

This module provides an overview of the following topics:

  • Cortical architecture and anatomy
  • Sub-cortical structures
  • Local and long-range connectivity
  • Action potentials and ion channels
  • Synaptic transmission
  • The role of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators
  • The role of non-neuronal cells e.g. glial cells
  • Neuronal plasticity and brain functions

Learning outcomes:

  • To understand how the brain is structured and the importance of different brain regions
  • To understand the architect of different cell types and how brain cells communicate
  • To understand the basic functions of brain plasticity
