Description

This module provides students with an introduction to various sub-disciplines within German studies including, but not necessarily always restricted to, history and linguistics.

The module does so through a series of case studies chosen to represent a specific theme and era. Each case study will introduce students to key questions and methods in the practice of history, linguistics, and related fields. Collectively these will offer students an effective introduction to the essential skills in these fields and also teach them how the fields relate to each other when addressing common questions.

The selection of case studies will be subject to regular review and change where required in response to student and tutor feedback, changing interests, overall module profile, and the research expertise of available staff. Indicative topics may include: myths and fairy tales; nations and nationalism; gender and sexuality; war and violence; National Socialism and the Holocaust; colonialism, migration, and racism.
