Description

This module provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the study of literature and film in German, and to associated topics and disciplines.

The module does so by covering a selection of literary texts and films, each one chosen to represent a key form, significant author/director, a literary or film movement, era or theme in order, as an ensemble, to offer an effective introduction to essential issues in the study of German literature and film. Care will be taken to make sure all set readings and viewings complement one another in this way. A wide historical range will be offered, including potentially any period from the Middle Ages to the present day, and the key literary genres (drama, poetry, narrative prose and their variants) as well as central approaches to film.

The selection of texts will be subject to regular review and change where required, in response to student and tutor feedback, changing interests, overall module profile and the teaching staff’s expertise. Indicative topics may include: exemplary literature or film; medieval narrative; Sturm und Drang; Weimar Classicism; Romanticism; Poetic Realism; Expressionist drama or film; Modernist poetry; Weimar Film and New German Film.

The module provides an introduction also to skills required for the study of literature and film, namely research, textual analysis, close reading, sequence analysis, evaluation of ideas in literary and film theory, use of secondary literature, small- and large-group discussion, meaningful guided independent study, presentation where required, academic writing in various forms.
