Description

The concept of 鈥榙iscourse鈥� is omnipresent in contemporary social science. After the 鈥榣inguistic turn鈥�, the social sciences have increasingly embraced the study of language as a central area of inquiry, focusing on the use of language in social interaction and as an active component in the construction of social reality. With the increasing popularity of qualitative inquiry focusing on language use, discourse analysis has become a basic part of social scientists鈥� methodological toolkit. The aim of this course is to provide a practical introduction to doing discourse analysis. The guiding idea is that researchers have to build their own models of discourse analysis for their projects, dependent on their research questions, data, and personal preferences. The immediate beneficiaries of the course are graduate students who want to analyse 鈥榩erceptions of鈥� or 鈥榙iscourse on鈥� X or Y. Although the focus is on the use of discourse analysis in the social sciences, the course is interdisciplinary and is open to and recommended to students of other disciplines as well.
