Description

This course aims to introduce students to diverse disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of migration, including a critical overview of core concepts and analytical frameworks. The course will review and examine the contours of this field of study, policy and practice, discussing key ideas and debates in relation to:

  1. different forms and processes of migration (examined, for instance, through socio-economic, demographic and ethnographic lenses);
  2. diverse policies and legal and institutional frameworks (including the ways in which migrants interact with, are affected by, national, regional and international laws and policies)
  3. identity, culture and experiences of migration (including approaches to integration, transnationalism and diaspora).

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of key theoretical concepts in migration studies, and of diverse disciplinary approaches. This will provide them with the tools to critically analyse flows and processes, data sources, policy, politics, and to assess theoretical developments in the interdisciplinary field of migration. They will acquire transferable research skills in critical thinking, information collection and management, communication and presentation.

The course will comprise a mixture of lectures and seminar discussion. Most sessions will mix staff-led and student-led elements. Students are expected to engage in independent reading in advance of each lecture, and to engage in informed discussion each week. Staff delivering the module are drawn from across UCL’s expertise in migration.

Students will develop the following transferable careers skills on this module: critical thinking, communication, academic writing, interdisciplinarity, creativity.
