Description

Summary

This module gives students the opportunity to bring together what they have learned across the programme, building on an aspect that is particularly of interest to you to undertake an original piece of desk-based research. Students will work independently to shape and engage with an area of humanitarian research that excites you. Projects can be an enhanced synthesis of the literature, a review of an area of humanitarian practice or intervention, or another aspect of your choice.

The aim of this module is to allow you the opportunity to identify personal areas of interest or specialisation to develop your academic skills for professional development.

You will begin to work on the project in term 2 through a number of research in practice sessions to assist you with identifying and addressing the project. The project will continue in term 3 and over the summer months with the deadline in later August.

The method of delivery

The module is primarily a student-centered learning experience, delivered largely through supported independent study and project work.Ìý Students will already have begun to think about their research project ideas over the course of Terms 1 and 2. In addition, they will already have explored key research skills methodologies, critical paradigms and approaches to research in practice in the other complementary core modules, especially the research methods module. To facilitate learning, there will be a series of workshop sessions in Term 2 to help shape ideas, as well as regular one to one sessions with nominated project supervisor(s). Each student will have at least one project supervisor (these may be supported by practitioners or others in the field). Students will be offered the chance to join informal weekly ‘drop-in sessions’ in Term 3 to discuss specific issues, share ideas and present and discuss readings and progress with the other students.
