Description

This module introduces students to key themes and problems in the environmental history of Latin America. Among the questions we will ask: what does it mean to study the history of 鈥渘ature鈥 in Latin America- and who gets to decide? How have colonialism, war, commodity booms, revolution, and industrialization transformed nature? How has the natural world shaped human societies? Is environmental history always tragic? Is there anything distinctive about the environmental history of this region? What does the Anthropocene mean in Latin America? What do we still need to know about this history? No prior knowledge is required, and students are encouraged to compare and connect Latin America with other parts of the world.听听
