Description

This module introduces first year undergraduate students to thinking and writing about political, social and environmental events, ranging from environmental disasters and infrastructure failures, to epidemics and conflicts. The module will enable students to think critically about past and on-going events, and the ways in which they are represented in both academic writing and the media. The course will focus on the analysis of a small number of past, recent and on-going events, and introduce students to a variety of ways of analysing, researching and representing events.

The core content of this module will focus on geographical events and various models of causation. This core content will be supplemented by case studies of a range of ripped-from-the-headlines current events, each of which will be explained in detail in order to articulate the circumstances that enabled change to unfold. While the specific case studies may change from year to year, previous topics have included Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and the impact of Hong Kong's reunion with China on today's patterns of migration.

Recommended Reading: In preparation for the module, we advise reading the following core text. It can be found in the ÐÂÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹ûlibrary:
