Description

Summary

This module ensures that you understand that evidence-based medicine (EBM) is important in making the appropriate decisions for individuals and populations, and as a tool for decision-making. It will provide you with the skills to practice EBM and to use the methods in your life-long learning. You will be taught how to turn a problem into a structured question that can be addressed by searching for and assessing the research literature.Ìý

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you will be able to:Ìý

  1. Understand how the structured question is used to guide the search for informationÌý

  1. Understand the context in which evidence is used to make decisionsÌý

  1. Be aware of issues in applying evidence to paediatric populationsÌý

  1. Gain knowledge, understanding and practical experience of how to search published literature for evidence to use in decision-making;Ìý

  1. Gain knowledge, understanding and practical experience of critically appraising the published literatureÌý

  1. Understand the steps involved in performing a systematic reviewÌý

  1. Understand how to use evidence about probabilities (or risk) in decision-makingÌý

  1. Know how to approach the evaluation of the validity and generalisability of a research article.Ìý

Who is this module for?

This is a core module for all MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathways, and optional module for the MRes in Child Health.Ìý

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will be delivered through in-person seminars, small group sessions and practicals (library searching and systematic review methodology).

Assessment

You will need to write and present a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT).
