Description

This module will introduce students to ethical issues across publishing sectors including trade and academic. Students will consider the tensions between professional and personal ethics in the industry through exploring topics including Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR); oversight and gatekeeping; diversity and inclusion; and uses of technology including generative AI.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to discuss:

  1. The ethical issues around publishing and related activities (reading, writing, editing and working with authors)
  2. The responsibilities publishers have towards authors, staff, owners and the wider reading world, through case studies highlighting the ethical dilemmas publishers face
  3. The differences between personal ethics such as honesty, kindness, fairness, integrity and professional ethics
  4. What a publishing code of ethics, similar to codes for journalists, would contain
  5. A personal code of good ethical behaviour for those working in publishing
