Description

This module examines relationships between the design and management of physical environments and their effectiveness in aiding teaching, learning and research outcomes. It reviews developments to date globally across the education sector, so as to understand the impacts on educational estates of shifting policies and initiatives, changing pedagogies and resource. The formal and informal built environments of learning are considered across different levels of education – pre-school, school, college/university, lifelong learning.

Students critically analyse different perspectives on learning environments (investment in estates and facilities management; teachers and learners; strategy and governance, government policy etc.,) and compare and contrast different evaluation methods and toolkits, so as to better understand the range and robustness of evidence that should underpin learning environment development.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop a critical overview of current changes in design and management, learning and teaching approaches, and strategic developments for learning environments globally, and at different levels of education.
  • Enable students to critically investigate, discuss and evaluate the variety of analytical methods used for understanding the effectiveness of different learning environments.
  • Test and evaluate available tools for improving and assessing learning environments from a variety of perspectives.
