Description

This module is an invitation to explore the relationship between education and religion in a variety of contexts. Almost everywhere religion has become increasingly relevant for making sense of the society, including understanding education. The module will explore the following questions: what has been the historical relationship between education and religion? What is the varied nature of relationship between state, religion and education in different countries? Should religion be taught in schools? What opportunities and tensions are created in the interaction of religion and education? How do children learn about religious ideas? Why are some educated young people attracted to violent extremism in the name of religion? What role religion plays in identity formation? Should liberal democracies allow for single faith schools? Overall, this module will help students develop critical and informed understanding of the changing landscape of religion and how it relates to the educational processes, systems and approaches, in various societal and historical contexts. The teaching will be through a combination of interactive talks, videos and small group work. The module will be particularly relevant for students interested in understanding the role of religion in education and society more generally, seeking to become teachers of religious education, PSCHE, citizenship, aiming to engage in youth work or community projects, or wanting to prepare for further academic study in topics to do with religion and society.
