Description
Through laboratory work, the course introduces students to:
鈥� the chemistry and physical properties of minerals;
鈥� morphological elements of crystallography;
鈥� the optical properties of minerals, introduced in conjunction with use of the petrographic microscope;
鈥� the physical, chemical and optical properties of the major rock-forming mineral groups.
- Intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks and clastic and chemical sedimentary rocks.
Students will become familiar with the following concepts:
鈥� phase diagrams;
鈥� atomic structure and bonding in crystalline solids;
鈥� principles of structural architecture: including close packing, coordination, number, interstitial sites, coordination polyedral;
鈥� elementary crystallography;
鈥� principles of crystal optics;
鈥� use of the polarizing microscope.
In additon, they will have a thorough knowledge of the physical, chemical and optical properties of the major rock-forming mineral groups.
