Description

This module covers key issues in the education and care of children under eight years old, focusing particularly on provision made in early childhood settings for children from birth to five (the current English Early Years Foundation Stage). The module is of interest to those concerned with early childhood provision in the UK and also to those with experience of other, international, contexts.

Content: Content includes a critical examination of the relationship between educational research, curriculum, evaluation and practice in early childhood education. The module incorporates a range of research and policy debates in early childhood education, diversity within provision and practice across a range of early years contexts, and current debates in early childhood education.

Teaching Delivery:

MA Early Years Education: This module is taught via 10 weekly lectures and seminars
MA Early Years Education (Online): This module is taught via online seminars.

  • Play and Socio-Cultural Learning in Early Childhood Education
  • Nordic Forest Schools and Chinese Anji Play
  • Dispositions for Learning through a Sociological Lens

Module Aims:
This module aims to:

  • Introduce students to a range of critical theories and recent research on young children’s learning.
  • Demonstrate the relationship of critical analytical theory and research evidence to the practice and provision of the different settings in which young children learn.
  • Enable students to critically analyse their prior learning and/or professional experience in the education of young children.
  • Integrate and critically apply the concepts associated with curriculum frameworks and pedagogies to the processes whereby young children learn.
