Description

This course is intended to introduce Earth Science students to a basic understanding of large scale processes in the Earth. Using simple mathematics, physics and chemistry, students will learn about the structure of the Earth from the crust to the core, including mantle convection, plate tectonics, earthquakes and its evolution from an accreting planet to now. It will also place the Earth in the context of other solar planets. Practical sessions will illustrate and build on the material in the lectures. In addition students will develop computer skills through the use of Matlab.

By the end of the course students will have an understanding of how why the Earth works and behaves in the way it does. They will know the internal structure and composition of the Earth. They will know the basic dynamical processes of convection and understand how it leads to surface structures and associated hazard. They will also understand the basics of seismology for studying the Earth's interior.

GEOL0007 The Earth is a pre-requisite for this module.
