Description

Description: Developing Clinical Formulations and Interventions

his module considers the significance of developing clinical formulations for casework that are informed by scientific findings presented in the remainder of the course. Clinical students may present cases and be supported by tutors in integrating their observations and findings with scientific research that was presented elsewhere on the course. Applied students are expected to participate in questioning and discussion of the formulation developments. Organisational systems are described such as the process of reintegration into education following an acquired brain injury and working with family systems to aid adjustment. The systems involved in specialist or community settings for acute or long-term support are also described, such as long-term multidisciplinary rehabilitation for children with acquired brain injury, specialist support for children with complex epilepsies, and educational support for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Intervention techniques such as compensatory and pharmacological interventions, person-centred approaches, and sensory-motor and biofeedback techniques, are discussed.Ìý

The content of this module is delivered in accordance with the British Psychological Society 2019 Clinical Neuropsychology Standards for Accreditation (Paediatric Programmes).

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  • Understand and demonstrate the processes involved in integrating multiple sources of neuroscientific and neuropsychological knowledge from different elements of the course to produce an informed neuropsychological clinical formulation.
  • Understand organisational systems and health and educational policies that are relevant to children with developmental learning difficulties or acquired brain injury.
  • Understand a range of specific intervention techniques, including compensatory techniques, person-centred approaches, restorative interventions and specialist methods.
  • Understand the influence of the environment on rehabilitative outcome as well as clinical issues involved when working with families and support staff to aid adjustment.

This is a core module for the MSc/PG Diploma in Applied/Clinical Paediatric Neuropsychology.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching is delivered through live face-to-face, online and pre-recorded lectures, alongside learning through readings and tutorials, discussion, and seminar sessions.
