Description

This module is designed to give you an introduction to the key economic concepts Ìýand principles of public health. In the first week, topics such as scare resources, efficiency vs. equity, markets elasticity of demand, costings production, marginal analysis, externalities and opportunity cost will be introduced. You will also learn about market failures and the application of economics principles for evaluating healthcare.

In week two of this module, you will begin to consider how sustainability fits into the decisions organisations make. ÌýThe link between grand challenges and corporate sustainability will be addressed particularly in regards to public health practices and behaviours. ÌýYou will learn how organisations operating in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry can integrate sustainability into their competitive strategies and value creation processes. There will also be an opportunity to critically reflect on socio-technical challenges in different contexts.

You will also learn how to present economic and health data. ÌýYou will explore fundamental concepts for analysing and visualising data. ÌýGraph and text data analysing techniques for web and big data and reporting the results and presenting the data with visualisation techniques will be learnt.

This module involves online preparation and reading prior to a four week block along with lab time for the data analysis and visualisation component:
Week 1 – Economics of Health
Week 2 – Integrating Sustainability into healthcare strategies
Week 3 – Tools for Visualising and Presenting Health Data
Week 4 – Wrap upÌý

Wrap up week is dedicated to engaging with health professionals who work in the various themed areas that you have been discussing and evaluating over the previous three weeks. They will take you through real world case studies that solidify the application of these themes to health and healthcare.
